Zum Mitlesen: A Dog in the Rain

It was a rainy morning in the small town. The sky was gray. Soft rain fell on the roofs and on the streets. The little houses looked quiet and sleepy. Water dripped from the trees. The air was cold and fresh.

Emma walked down the street to the market square. She was thirty years old. She had short brown hair and light skin. She wore a yellow raincoat, blue jeans, and green boots. The rain fell on her raincoat, but she did not mind. Emma often smiled, and she smiled now too. She liked the rain. She liked the sound of the water on the ground.

Her green boots made small splashes in the puddles. Splash, splash, splash. Emma walked slowly. She was not in a hurry. The town was very quiet this morning. Only a few people were out. Most people stayed at home, warm and dry.

Emma came to the market square. On sunny days, the square was full of people. There were tables with fruit, bread, and flowers. But today the square was empty. The rain kept everyone away. Emma looked around. The wet stones shined in the gray light.

Then she stopped. She saw something by a wall. It was small and brown. At first, Emma thought it was a bag or a box. But then it moved. It was a little dog.

The dog sat alone by the wall. He was very small. He had soft brown fur and long ears. His fur was wet from the rain. The dog looked cold. He was shaking a little. He had a white spot on his chest. Around his neck he wore a red collar.

[sighs] Emma's heart felt sad. A little dog, all alone, in the cold rain. Where was his family? Why was he here by himself?

"Oh, little one," Emma said softly. "You are all wet."

The dog did not move. He just looked at her. His eyes were big and sad.

Emma came close, but slowly. She did not want to scare the dog. She walked one step, then another step. She kept her voice soft and kind.

"Hello," she said. "It is okay. I will not hurt you. I want to help you."

The little dog looked up at her. His eyes were dark and sad. He looked tired and afraid. But he did not run away. He stayed by the wall.

Emma stopped in front of the dog. She bent down. Now she was close to him. The rain fell on both of them. The dog was very small next to her.

"You are cold," Emma said. "And you are wet. Poor little dog. Are you lost?"

The dog gave a small sound. It was a soft, sad sound. Then he looked at Emma again with his big eyes.

Emma felt something warm in her heart. She could not leave this little dog here. Not in the cold rain. Not all alone. She had to help him.

She looked at the red collar. Maybe there was a name. Maybe there was an address. [pauses] Slowly, Emma reached out her hand toward the little brown dog.
