The bus stopped at the edge of a small fishing village called Porthaven. The doors opened, and warm summer air came inside. Lena stepped out with her bag and looked around. She was nineteen years old, with long dark brown hair in a loose ponytail and light skin with a few freckles. She wore blue jeans, white trainers, and a soft yellow raincoat, even though the sky was clear. In her hand she held a small green notebook, the way other people hold a phone.
Porthaven was tiny and quiet. White houses stood close together along a narrow street. Little boats rocked in the harbour, and the water was calm and blue. Seagulls turned slow circles in the sky. [breathes] Lena took a deep breath. She had come here for a simple summer, just to read and rest, and the place felt exactly right.
High above the village, on a green cliff, stood a white lighthouse. It looked bright and proud against the sky. Lena had read that the lighthouse held a very small library, and books were the thing she loved most. So she walked up the narrow path, past wild flowers and low stone walls, while the sound of the waves grew softer below her.
At the top, the lighthouse door was open. Lena knocked gently and went inside. The round room was cool and smelled of old paper and the sea. And there, along the curved wall, stood shelves full of books. It was the tiniest library she had ever seen, and she loved it at once.
"Hello there," said a warm, deep voice.
An old man came slowly down the winding stairs. He was seventy-two years old, with short white hair and a short white beard. His skin was sun-brown with many wrinkles, and he wore a thick grey wool jumper, brown trousers, and an old blue cap. His eyes were kind.
"I am Mr. Trelawny," he said. "I keep the light, and I keep these old books too. Not many people climb all the way up here."
"I am Lena," she said. "I love books. May I stay and read sometimes?"
"Of course," he said with a smile. "The library is always open for a reader."
They talked for a while about the village and the sea. Then Lena thanked him and walked back down to the harbour, feeling happy and light. [sighs]
Near the boats, a young man was cleaning a fishing net. He was twenty years old, with short curly black hair, dark skin, and a bright, friendly smile. He wore a striped blue-and-white shirt, dark shorts, and yellow rubber boots.
"You're new here," he said, looking up. "I'm Sam. I fish with my father most mornings."
"I'm Lena. I'm here for the summer," she answered.
"Then welcome to Porthaven," Sam laughed. "If you ever need to find someone or something, just ask me. I know everyone."
Lena smiled and opened her green notebook to write down the day. She did not know it yet, but this quiet village held a secret waiting on a dusty shelf. And very soon, she would find it.
